Monthly Tips
January
It’s time to prepare for growing in the year ahead: dust and scrub your pots, trays and labels. Clean and sharpen your tools and, if necessary replace tools.
Check that the seeds you intend to sow are in date and stored in a cool, dry, mouse-free container.
It’s a great time to plant trees and hedging as the ground is moist and still not frozen!
Keep on clearing winter debris from your beds and mulch them with leaf mould, bark or compost: watch out for emerging bulbs!
If you have a patch of perennial weeds, now is a good time to tackle it before the weeds begin to grow again.
Continue harvesting leeks, kale and parsnips. Prune autumn-fruiting raspberries to soil level.
Don’t forget to provide food for the birds in your garden.
Bulbs such as tulips that you haven't got around to putting in the garden, can still be planted as long as they are firm and mould-free. Pots of spring flowering bulbs are also in stock which are ideal for planting in tubs and borders.
Hellebores are flowering now - their hanging flowers are lovely picked and floated in a bowl of water.
